Here are Susan Bryant's comments of the verification
process:
- For me, the process was first of all a valuable learning
experience. It was great to get an "inside" view
of a chemical company and
of the workings of the Responsible Care process. Thanks
for the opportunity!
- Most impressive to me was the positive approach of the
Responsible Care program. The verifiers are clearly committed
to helping and
encouraging companies to be successful and proactive in
following the path
of R.C. They see their role less as judges than as facilitators
for the best
interests of the company and the chemical industry.
- The R.C. verification seemed to me very thorough. They
get
into detail about lots of issues. But the overall intention
in their very
detailed questions is to get a feel for the "hearts
and minds" of people in
the company, both management and employees, to see if they
have taken the
R.C. ethic to heart, keeping it a central focus in their
operations and
attitudes.
- It was very heartening for me to witness the R.C. ethic
at
work in Canada Colors and Sulco, illustrating that it's
not a pie-in-the-sky
ideal but a realistic approach with many tangible, practical
benefits for
companies like yours who take R.C. seriously. I think everyone
recognizes
the effort that has to go into a commitment to continuous
improvement and to
tracking all the R.C. requirements---especially for a small
company. But
from my standpoint as a member of the community, R.C. companies
can truly
give the locals a sense of security and safety for themselves
and the
environment. Verification under R.C. really means something.
It's not just a
look-good p.r. exercise.
- On the requirements for community outreach, I recognize
how
frustrating it must be to not have lots of interest from
the community in
your operations and efforts to keep the neighbourhood safe.
Yet it's still
worth the continuous effort that R.C. requires to keep the
community
informed and involved, even when you don't get much feedback.
It's rather
like preventive medicine---immediate results are hard to
see. But if you
stop exercising, eating well and sleeping enough, the negative
consequences
can ultimately create big problems. Communities are quick
to notice when
things go wrong and slow to forgive if a company has not
been open about the
risks and been seen to try to communicate those risks and
solicit community
input.
- I thought Sulco and Canada Colors did a fine job as hosts
for the verification team, and your people were very open
and responsive to
the questions they had. No doubt in their report, the expert
verifiers will
have a few suggestions for the company, but my guess is
that their overall
assessment will be very positive. Mine is.
